Tattoos: A Modern-Day Art

As reknown U.S. author Thomas Berger would say, "What is art but a way of seeing?" ("Famous..." 1) Art comes in many forms, poetry, music, paintings, but not many people realize that art could be sitting on the forearm of the student next to you. Tattooing is an art that many modern-day individuals do not recognize and some may even find offensive. I hope to give you a better insight on how to have a new respect for the art of tattooing as a cultural artifact and not as the taboo that it is seen as. Together, we will travel through the key points of tattoo cultural history: from the ancient egyptians, to the barbary pirates of the South Seas, to cultural tattooing and closing with the modern-day underground lifestyle. Although, this may not be a topic that everyone agrees on, I think we can all concur that this is a topic that widely influences todays generation. And whether we like it or not, it will continue to influence the generations of the future. Now, I may not be able to convince you to get a tattoo or even walk into a shop, but maybe you and I both will be able to find a new appreciation for the art, history, and cultural relevance of tattoos.
